Luc pulled his chair closer to Naomi’s and draped his arm across her shoulders. The candlelight bathed her skin in a warm, cheerful glow. Her hair glinted gold when she turned, surveying the other patrons clustered around their tables. It had an oddly romantic and intimate feel, despite the raging wind and rain. It might be his imagination, but it sounded as if the storm were blowing itself out. They could only hope. There was still time to see Naomi on the beach, happily sunbathing.

He glanced at her and smiled at the back of her head. He was still in wonder how fast the afternoon had transpired. In his wildest dreams, he’d hoped that days spent together would culminate in making love once. That they’d begun that way made him want more.

Naomi’s hair was swept up into a clip, leaving her neck exposed. She’d left off the sweater at his request, and he was pleased she had. He dipped his head and kissed her neck. It was only a little of what he wanted to do to her, but they were in public.

She gasped and jerked her head around, eyes large.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you.”

“It’s fine,” she mumbled, and continued her study of the other guests.

Luc ran his hand down her back, rubbing her shoulders. He’d wondered what it would be like when they were together, if it could be as easy as it was on-line, if they had the chemistry. Given time, he thought they could reach the same comfort level, but the chemistry. That was there.

Yet he couldn’t shake the idea that something was off. Naomi glanced around them, never looking one place more than a few seconds, and rarely at him.

He picked up her hand and lifted it to his lips. There were many things he knew about her, facts, bits of information. And for every one thing he knew, there were ten he didn’t, but wanted to. He bounced his knee, second guessing himself again. There was so much to tell her, but the words escaped him.

Naomi twisted until her back was to him, her elbow on the table. She’d told him about her bad habit of biting her nails when she was really nervous, and though he couldn’t see her hand, he didn’t think she was scratching an itch.

“What’s wrong?” Luc leaned backward to catch a glimpse of her face.

“Hm?” Naomi turned toward him, but her gaze went over his shoulder.

“You’re biting your nails.” He tugged her hand from her face. “Is something the matter?”

She shook her head and tracked a waiter weaving through the tables. “Oh, no. Just wondering what they’re going to feed us.”

He didn’t believe that answer.

“The maître d' said there were sandwiches,” he replied.

“Oh.”

Frowning, he tugged on her hand. “Naomi, are you upset? Have I done something wrong?”

“Upset? No. Why would I be?” Her eyelashes fluttered as her gaze dropped to the table.

Luc tilted her chin, directing her to meet his gaze. “You’re anxious. You won’t look at me.
